How Much Milk Thistle Seed should I have?
My good friend Elena over at Golden Oils introduced me to Milk Thistle Seed.
I’ve been testing it in the kitchen, especially in my smoothies. For therapeutic purposes, you can take 1-2 tsp up to three times a day, preferably half an hour before meals mixed in water.
Alternatively, use 1-2 tsp a day in food, sprinkled on soups and salads or blended with yoghurt, protein drinks, or fruit juice.
Milk Thistle Seed History
The prickly milk thistle (Silybum marianum) has been used for 2,000 years as a herbal remedy. A native plant of the Mediterranean region, it is commonly used as both food and medicine. Now, this plant can be found throughout the world and grows in dry, sunny areas.
What is Milk Thistle Seed?
Milk thistle contains the antioxidant silymarin, which is thought to help support your body with hormonal balance as well and liver health.
Our liver works hard to filter out toxins our body absorbs and this can also include excess hormones. Milk thistle seed can help stimulate the liver to cleanse itself, while also stimulating the renew of liver cells and to stimulate the liver and gallbladder to secrete bile, aiding in digestion.
Now back to add milk thistle seed to your smoothie! The combinations are endless, as it’s a really good mixer with a mild flavour of taste. I just love that as well as having a tasty smoothie I get help protect my liver too! I’m sure I’m be featuring milk thistle again soon, so stay tuned…
Milk Thistle Seed Blueberry Smoothie Recipe
- 1/2 cup frozen blueberries
- 1 large frozen banana
- 1 tsp Maca Powder
- 1 tsp Milk Thistle Seed Powder
- 1 tsp Chia Seeds
- 1/2 water or nut milk
- A handful of fresh mint leaves
Add all to your blender and mix it up. I like this one in spring when blueberries are in season. I freeze the blueberries and banana so this smoothie has a creamy chilled texture. Perfect in the morning as breakfast. If you like this recipe you might also like some of my other smoothie recipes.
What does it taste like?
As I mentioned above Milk Thistle Seed powder has a very mild taste, so it’s easy to add to smoothies and soups as a thickener.
Using maca powder is optional, but has been said to help balance out your hormones, so this is a good one if you have hormonal issues.
Use it for detoxing!
I recently also heard a doctor talk about the benefits of Milk Thistle to help with parasite cleansing. So why is it so good? Well, silymarin is the primary component in Milk Thistle helps to remove liver toxins.
Toxins can accumulate in our liver if we are drinking alcohol, stressed and not eating right. So when doing a parasite cleanse which we all need to do regular, Milk Thistle can assist cleansing the toxins given off by parasites. It can also support liver cell regeneration, and its antioxidant action protects against cell damage from toxins.
