Oil pulling this year become the thing to do on the health scene with lots of people reporting positive feedback from this 15-20min ritual. The practice of oil pulling is not a new concept as it started in India thousands of years ago.
When I first heard about it a while back I thought how disgusting swishing oil around in your mouth like mouthwash for 20mins – why would anyone do that? Then it just kept popping up everywhere and when that happens it means I need to look into it further.
If you follow my blog you will know I’m big on detoxing and after reading up about it and how it works I thought I must give this a go. Needless to say I’ve been doing oil pulling on and off for over 6 months and love it! Before I get into the benefits I think I should explain what it is and why I do it.
What is Oil Pulling?
Oil pulling is an age-old remedy where you swish a spoonful of oil around in your mouth for around 15-20 mins each day, then you spit it out. You can use any vegetable-based natural oil to do this and some articles I’ve read suggest you should alternate between different oils. I’m not that adventurous yet so have just been using coconut oil as I like the taste and I know it has strong antibacterial properties.
Our mouths are gateways to our body’s ecosystem and by doing oil pulling you are able to cut through plaque and pull out toxins and harmful bacteria without disturbing the teeth or gums. You are getting theses nasties to exit the building before they even enter it, thus naturally improving your oral healthcare regime.
What are the advantages of oil pulling?
The biggest difference I have noticed is that my teeth are really white. Before I knew about living a healthy lifestyle I used to spend loads on whitening toothpaste and would always have sensitive teeth and bleeding gums (yes I was also an avid flosser). These days my gums don’t bleed, I never feel that filmy feeling on my teeth and I never have bad breath.
Others have reported that the other benefits include: Cavity/gingivitis prevention, less jaw pain, improved sleep/sinus issues, alleviation of headaches, hangovers and skin issues. How can you not want to try this?
The first time you do this maybe a bit strange, I also had a saw jaw from all the swishing. Try not to swallow the oil either, as that defeats the purpose. Also be prepared that what you spit out will be thicker than you expect as it is mixed with your spit, but your teeth will feel smooth and clean. After you finish this process you can brush your teeth (with natural toothpaste of course) and floss as normal. Our teeth and gums are so important as they are the gateway to our body’s ecosystem, you might also like to read my post on Why I use natural toothpaste ~ Happy healthy teeth to you all!
