While in New Zealand Persimmon fruit was in full season. It reminded me so much of my grandma, as she loved it and while staying at my Aunty’s house her tree that my grandma had care for was in total abundance. It was almost like my nana was there, her Earth spirit sending me these amazing golden orange, round flavor filled, smooth textured delicacy fruits originally from the East Asia.
As a youngster I didn’t really care for them much or homegrown food, but these days it’s more valuable to me than anything bought from a shop. They are sweet, delicious, bright orange coloured fruits with many health promoting nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants. I certainly enjoyed eating them, absorbing all the vitality each one had to offered me. I also thought of my amazing nana with every mouthful and how amazing a woman she was. She grew so much of her own food and I guess now I’m following her spirit to do the same!
In my family the ruling of how ripe it should be is divided, as my aunty loves it when they are like a slushy and I prefer them more crisp like an apple. When they become too soft for me I adding them to my smoothies as didn’t want a single one to go to waste. With added super powders of spirulina and maca, it really packed a punch. Not having a juicer meant I had to improvise with green smoothies instead.
The Persimmon, banana & spirulina smoothie recipe
Ingredients – serves 1
- 1x large extra ripe persimmon
- 1x large banana (preferred mine frozen)
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 Tbsp spirulina powder
- 1 Tbsp maca powder
- 3x dates
Scoop out the flesh of the persimmon, make sure you take out any seeds and add to your blender. Add 1 frozen banana, 1 cup almond milk (you can add more depending on how thick you like your smoothies), spirulina powder, maca powder and dates. Blend until it’s thick and creamy. You can add more dates or banana if you like it sweeter. You can also add water if it’s too thick for you until you get the right consistency. Sit in sunshine and enjoy!
