When do I do skin brushing?
Skin brushing is something I’ve done every day now for years and I love it! My skin loves it and I can see and feel the difference from when it wasn’t a daily practice.
I like to do skin brushing in the morning as feel it helps to wake me up through my skin as the saying goes “love the skin you’re in!”. So after my chi self-massage, journalling and meditation I love skin brushing. I do this before my breast massage as otherwise, your skin in that area can be a bit sensitive.
Why it’s called dry skin brushing
Just try to do it either first thing in the morning, otherwise, you’ll never do it! Or before you have a shower so you can wash away those dead skin cells.
It’s better to skin brush on dry skin as it allows you to exfoliate and increase blood circulation without robbing it of moisture. Also, the brush won’t go mouldy and you can be more focused.

1. Skin brushing for beauty
In addition to brushing off old dry skin especially on areas like knees, elbows and ankles, skin brushing promotes tighter, softer skin.
I don’t know how many times someone has touched my arm and then commented on how smooth my skin feels.
Yes, sun, diet, exercise and drinking lots of spring water helps, but so does touching your skin, feeding it with natural oils.
Good beauty body skincare doesn’t need to be expensive, chemical laden or hard to find, all it requires is for you to spend a few minutes each day loving yourself. Later in this blog, I write the essential oils I like to use on my skin.
2. Skin brushing for detoxing
Dry brushing unclogs pores during the exfoliation process, this helps to detox your body and promote healthy skin. Buy taking long strokes with the brush you are also It also stimulating your nervous system and working your lymphatic system release toxins.
No wonder you will feel invigorated afterwards. Our skin is our largest organ, we breathe and absorb information through it so it’s so important we take care of it.
I noticed when I had lots of toxic builds up in my body I would constantly get rashes, eczema and pimples. It’s was my skin’s way of communicating with me to change my diet and unhealthy habits. Nowadays I don’t even wear sunscreen, I don’t put a lot of product or anything on my skin but it’s better than ever!

3. Skin brushing to reduce cellulite
Cellulite isn’t something that just happens with age and something you will never be able to reduce.
While it is true that the older you get the more easily you can get it, this is due to poor diet choices, alcohol, accumulation of toxins and stress. Skin brushing can help to smooth out those lumps and bumps. But if you don’t change your lifestyle you won’t change your cellulite, it will remain.
It’s a reminder from your body that something is not right, a garbage bin under your skin you need to empty! A good start to get this moving is to skin brush! It’s cost-effective, takes hardly any time and you feel good after… why wouldn’t you do it?
Helpful skin brushing guidelines
Once or twice a day. I do this once a day in the morning, as mentioned above. Make sure your skin is dry before you start and it doesn’t take long before you start seeing and feeling the results.
You need to brush towards the heart, making long strokes as you go. Avoid brushing back and forth or in circular motions. By making long strokes towards the heart this is to encourage blood and lymphatic flow.
Start at your feet, moving up the legs on both sides, then work from the arms toward your chest and on your stomach, direct the brush anticlockwise. You don’t need to brush too hard to reap the benefits and you should never brush irritated areas of skin where there are rashes or cuts.
What type of brush should I use?
The brush and bristles should be natural you can easily pick one up at chemist or health food shop. I started with a beechwood body brush, the bristles at first felt a bit stiff. Start off with gentle soft strokes as this should be enjoyable not torcher. The more you do it the harder you can press and the more you enjoy this self-care practice.
A brush with a detachable handle and straps behind the bush is great, especially if you’re not that flexible to do your back. I started off with one of these but as I also do lots of flexibility movements I like the brush with no handle as it’s also easier to travel with.
What if If I have sensitive skin, can I still dry brush?
As a rule never dry brush over skin that is broken. This includes cuts, scrapes, lesions, sores or burned skin, and sunburns. Don’t ever brush over areas of infection, redness or general irritation, inflammation or skin cancer.
Stop dry brushing if skin becomes irritated or inflamed, it might be the brush or that it’s not for you. I also do not recommend using the brush on your face, as it’s too harsh. Instead, you can do face massage!
Upgrade your Skin Brushing with a Copper Brush
I started off with a simple natural skin brush and have now upgraded to one with copper fibres also called the Energy brush from Living Libations.
The Energy Brush is made with bronze bristles that contain real copper and zinc. The way this is made allows ions to be captured by the skin and you give you a revived feeling. At first again it felt a bit rough, but I got used to it and now I love it!
I also love to use an oil blend with my body skin brushing. Never use essential oils direct, instead, keep in a bottle and blend with a carrier oil like sweet almond. I rub some on the palms of my hands first, rub my hands together and then move them over the bristles. It’s a very gentle, cost-effective way to also nourish your skin and let your senses ignite.
