I’ve been a bit slack with posting on my blog recently, but life just seems to happen and I’ve come to realise that I can’t do everything, otherwise I will go back to living in state of constant stress again and that was no fun. Recently I’ve been on a journey of self love and learning to be ok with not doing 10 million things at once, blogging included. I’ve been enjoying taking the time to look at my connection to myself and also spending more time doing the things I love. One area that I needed to take time back from was how often I was online.

A few years ago I read the book ‘The Primal Blueprint’ by Mark Sisson, it really made me think about grains and how the growth of the agriculture industry has impacted our health. I took many valuable principles from this book and even did a paleo diet for a bit. How our food is created, grown and processed has a big impact on our health and it’s interesting that even though we are the most advanced we have ever been in new medical developments, we are also the sickest we have ever been. Not being on some sort of medication or having over the counter drugs at home is now a rare occurrence in the western world. We need to be questioning – what has changed?

I tend to mostly eat at home these days as I know what I am building my body with. My love of cooking and discovering new foods/liquids just keeps growing, maybe because my connection to everything around me does too? I have also found I need to avoid things like wheat, which renowned cardiologist and author of the “Wheat Belly” Dr William Davis explains how eliminating wheat from our diets can prevent fat storage, shrink unsightly bulges, and reverse myriad health problems.

Healthy Sprouted Muesli Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cup sprouted buckwheat
  • 1 cup coconut shavings
  • 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 goji berries
  • 1/2 cashew nuts
  • 1/2 cup organic sultanas
  • 1/2 cup organic black currants
  • 1/4 cup inca berries
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 2 Tbs raw honey
  • 1 tbs cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • pinch rock salt

Method

I sprouted the buckwheat and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin & cashew nuts), then on a flat oven tray and low heat in the oven dried them out for 30min. Once dry I added in the coconut, cinnamon, honey & coconut oil. I mixed that in really well and put back in the oven constantly mixing up the turning the muesli every 5-10mins until it was brown and crunchy. I let this cool down and added the currants, sultanas, chia seeds and goji berries to the mix. Then bottled it in an airtight container. It’s simple to make just takes a bit of time, but the end result is so yummy and worth it. You can also tailor this mix to the things you like.

What is Buckwheat?

Buckwheat, sometimes referred to as kasha and is a great alternative to wheat and it’s gluten free. Despite its name a form of wheat, buckwheat is actually related to rhubarb. It has a strong nutty taste so is a good one to use as a base with other ingredients, as the taste of the finished product can be very overpowering and a little bitter. It’s an easy one to find in health food stores and takes 2-3 days to sprout and turn it into a more nutritious alive food.
