Toothpaste is probably something you don’t really think about right?

Toothpaste is something use everyday (guessing you do if you’re reading this blog) if not more than once and for most people it’s the first thing they put into their mouths. I used to be quite obsessed with having the whitest teeth possible (I wanted the Beverly Hills white smile), so I would always choose a tube based on its whitening properties. I’ve never had any major dental problems, but did have sensitive teeth, bleeding gums and my teeth were starting to look a bit transparent (which was also due to the ventolin asthma inhaler I use to use). Now fast forward a few years later, where I live a much healthier lifestyle, including using natural toothpaste and my teeth have never felt cleaner, looked whiter (people even comment on this) and feel stronger.

Our mouths are a gateway to a wealth of information linked to our bodies, normally called the meridian gateway to our bodies. You can find many meridian teeth charts online which shows you if you have a problem in your mouth what organ it might be related to. I know that when I have an mouth ulcer, it is normally because I’m over stressed or run down and need to take it easy. When I have bleeding gums it’s always in an area that’s related to digestive issues I might be having. I love the emergence of bio-dentists who are also teaching people to breath correctly and because I haven’t needed to go to the dentist in the last 5 years it must mean I am doing something right!

But wait there’s more…

Have you ever read the warning label on a tube of toothpaste? “Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Centre right away.” Due to rules being more relaxed this has been replaced in some countries with a less frightening warning. Just google some of the ingredients and the side effects (funny how these effects always do something to your major organs than your sides). Commercial toothpaste can also contain artificial sweeteners, coloring agents, artificial flavors, acrylic polymers to prevent bacteria Fluoride which is a toxic substance and is also added to water.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) another ingredient to be aware of is the synthetic detergent also found in floor cleaner and engine degreaser.SLS is a skin irritant that is easily absorbed and accumulates in the heart, brain and liver for a long time. Why would you want to put this in your mouth? Knowing what chemicals to look for on labels is part of your own self care system.

What natural toothpaste do I buy?

There are so many awesome options for natural toothpaste and tooth powders at the health store. If it has numbers and words that are crazy long, pick another. You should be able to look up the ingredients pretty easy these days with your mobile in hand and a quick web search. But if you are going back to basics like me, you might like to make your own tooth powder like I do. I have been doing this for a few years now, along with flossing, brushing my gums gently, scraping my tongue (copper scraper) and smiling lots!

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt/Himalayan rock salt, finely ground
  • 1 drop peppermint, clove, or citrus pure essential oil
  • A few drops of water
